Implications of the EU Commission's Competitive Compass for SMEs

30 Jan 2025

The EU Commission officially published the Competitive Compass on 29/01/2025.
On paper, it is at least a clear strategic move to strengthen the competitiveness of the EU.

Part of this strategy is the simplification of regulatory requirements for businesses under the Omnibus Initiative. The EU estimates that these measures could save up to 37.5 billion euros in administrative costs by the end of the mandate (2029)!

The introduction of a new company category "Small Mid Caps" for sustainability reporting obligations will take place. For these companies, administrative burden related to sustainability regulations is expected to be reduced by 35%. The aim is for smaller companies to benefit from less stringent regulations and to better focus on growth and innovation!

The full article is available here on the EU Commission's website.

Next month, the first simplifications from the Omnibus package will be published, aiming to reduce bureaucracy and facilitate businesses in handling regulatory requirements.

We are eager to see how the actual implementation will look and hope that it will truly help the affected companies work more efficiently and successfully implement sustainability initiatives.
